Console en ébène et laque de Chine

Console desserte en ébène ouvrant à deux tiroirs.

Elle est décorée d’un panneau de laque de chine à motifs de prunus sur l’entretoise. Le devant de la ceinture est orné d’une laque européenne  imitant cette même laque de chine.

Elle repose sur quatre pieds octogonaux en ébène, fuselés dans la partie basse.

Décoration de bronze ciselé et doré comme le haut des pieds à l’imitation d’un toit de pagode et la galerie de l’entretoise en frise de caractère chinois « pinyin » (il symbolise dans le bouddhisme chinois la réalisation des « dix mille mérites », qui promettent le Nirvana).

Dessus de marbre blanc.

Epoque : Louis XVI, circa 1785

On peut rapprocher cette console, des meubles réalisés par les ébénistes Martin Carlin, Adam Weisweiler et Claude-Charles Saunier pour le compte du marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre vers la fin du XVIII° siècle.

Ebony and chinese lacq Console

A side console table in ebony with two drawers

It is decorated with a Chinese lacquer panel depicting Japanese flowering cherries on the stretcher.  The front of the apron is embellished with a European lacquer imitating this Chinese panel.  The table stands on four octagonal legs in ebony, tapered at the bottom.

It has a fine ormolu decoration on the tops of the legs, in the shape of the roof of a Chinese pagoda, and the gallery around the stretcher adorned with a frieze of the Chinese character “pinyin” (symbolizing, in Chinese Buddhism, the achievement of the “ten thousand merits” that promise Nirvana).  The top is in white marble.

Period: Louis XVI, circa 1785

This console can be compared with the furniture made by the cabinetmakers Martin Carlin, Adam Weisweiler and Claude-Charles Saunier for the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre towards the end of the 18th century.
